Etienne Wenger is a social scientist and learning theorist whose concept of the Community of Practice has helped bring practical understanding to the social learning theories of Vygotsky, Bandura & Piaget. With a premise that learning is identity management, Wenger seeks to explain learning as something contextualized in an environment and supported by the structures and hierarchies of such an environment. Moreover, community is not ordained; it grows organically, though through design and support it has more potential to flourish.
From 2012, Etienne Wenger provides a retrospective on his Community of Practice and learning = identity management concepts. The entire piece is a good read; however, pags 1-6 are the most germane to our group.
